Rugged Tablet Meets Changing Mission Requirements

Dell has unveiled the industry’s smallest 12.1-inch rugged convertible tablet PC, which is the first with a multi-touch display, the Latitude XT2 XFR. The system is designed to meet the unique and demanding needs of customers in the military, police, border patrol, field service organizations, factory fulfillment and first responders. Inspired by discussions with the defense, law enforcement, homeland security communities, field service departments and utility companies, Dell developed a convertible tablet that can adapt to changing mission requirements and withstand harsh environments. At 1.5 inches it is the thinnest 12.1-inch rugged convertible tablet and starts at 5.4 pounds with four-cell battery and solid state drive. It is engineered and independently tested to meet MIL-810G standards for operation in harsh environments. Dell expects to receive MIL-810G certification. A compression-seal and rugged I/O doors, LCD, and keyboard provide an IP54 level of ingress protection, or resistance to moisture and dust. The Latitude XT2 XFR can be installed in police or first-responder vehicles where critical information can be accessed with one hand. The Latitude XT2 XFR is also ideal for work forces that need an easy-tocarry, rugged system that can stand up to drops, spills and temperature extremes.

Multi-Threat Security Appliance Meets High-End Requirements

Fortinet, a provider of network security and unified threat management solutions, has announced a new FortiGate multi-threat security appliance designed to meet high-end requirements of the mid-enterprise customer segment. The new FortiGate-1240B appliance offers best-in-class 40 Gbps firewall and 16 Gbps IPSec VPN throughputs, which represent a 400 percent and 800 percent performance advantage, respectively, over the nearest competitor. The FortiGate-1240B platform continues the technology excellence formula introduced on the other two members of Fortinet’s mid-enterprise family—the FortiGate-310B and FortiGate-620B—by also providing the highest port density and best price/performance ratio among products in its class. The three products make up Fortinet’s complete range of multi-threat security appliances for the mid-enterprise. The company also announced recently that the Fortinet FortiGate family of multi-threat security appliances has successfully completed the stringent certification process and is now approved for listing on the Army Information Assurance Approved Products List. The product has been approved by the Army Office of Information Assurance and Compliance, having completed all of the steps necessary, including a favorable evaluation conducted by the Army Technical Integration Center.

Subscription Service Offers Remote Network Monitoring and Management

AirWave OnDemand (AoD) from Aruba Networks is an enterprise-class network management and monitoring solution, deployed using the software as a service (SaaS) model. The subscription-based service, housed at a secure Aruba data center, uses dedicated, virtual instances of Aruba’s award-winning multi-vendor AirWave Wireless Management Suit (AWMS) to remotely manage and monitor enterprise wireless LANs. The full suite of AWMS features, including multi-vendor network management, is available through AoD. Subscribers can monitor and change wireless LAN settings, generate compliance reports, locate users and Wi-Fi devices, and diagnose problems from any Internet connection. Like other SaaS applications, AoD does away with the expense of installing and operating servers and managing software. It also provides new business opportunities to service providers and resellers by allowing them to build managed wireless LAN services on top of AoD. AirWave OnDemand offers users the same enterprise-class management, monitoring and reporting capabilities as AWMS but on a subscription basis. The service supports compatible Fat APs and controller-based wireless LANs. Subscriptions are available on a monthly or annual basis.
