Ruggedized Hardware Update

Vehicular Portable Computer Functions as Separate Units

Elbit Systems’ Land and C4I-Tadiran has unveiled its next-generation two-unit split Tacter-31MVP (vehicular portable) rugged computer platform. The new and improved Tacter-31MVP offers all of the capabilities and features of the existing Tacter-31M family. Tacter-31MVP contains all the existing portable vehicular capabilities and features with the unique ability to function as two separate, compact and highly rugged units: the computer unit and the display unit. The computer unit, to be installed in a hidden location in the vehicle, is based on the technology of the existing Tacter-31M. The Tacter-31M family of rugged computers, the most versatile, digital messaging terminal for all tasks in the modern digital battlefield, is one of the smallest and most advanced rugged vehicular and handheld computers available. Suitable for all echelons, the Tacter-31M platform comes equipped with the most powerful processor in its class: Intel Pentium M 1.8 GHz. The unit integrates the high performance new SAASM military GPS receiver that can also be used in all terrains, including urban missions.

In-Vehicle/Fixed-Mount Unit Offers All-in-One Solution

The Enterprise Mobility business from Motorola has announced the new VC6096 in-vehicle/fixed-mount mobile computer—a rugged all-in-one solution designed to help maximize driver productivity, reduce costs and improve service. The VC6096 in-vehicle/fixed-mount mobile computer is a versatile solution that enables the collection of business-essential data, including mileage, location, driver performance and vehicle metrics. With integrated GPS, the VC6096 provides the asset visibility needed to support real-time location-based applications. By providing mobile workers with simultaneous voice and data connections via 3.5G WAN connectivity on the GSM network, enterprises can now realize increased productivity and enhanced service as a result of route optimization. The VC6096 also improves the safety and life cycle of vehicle fleets with integrated SAE J1708 and SAE J1939 telematics support. Transportation customers are now armed with the tools for automatic monitoring and collection of engine operation information. The VC6096 can also provide information on the driving patterns of mobile workers to identify safety issues, eliminate unnecessary wear and tear on vehicles and minimize fuel consumption. In addition, the VC6096 offers an open platform that allows customers to select and control applications and peripherals that best meet their business needs.

Rugged Keyboards Fit Rackmount Computer Systems

Rackmount computers in industrial and military environments require tough, rugged equipment. iKey, a manufacturer of rugged computer peripherals for industrial and military applications, builds standard and custom rackdrawer keyboards with rugged features that fit perfectly into rackmount computer systems. Each iKey rackdrawer keyboard built with an industrial silicone rubber keypad meets NEMA 12 specifications, which means it is resistant to dripping water, condensation, dirt and dust particles. Standard models include the RDC-1000, which features a fullsize number pad, and the RDC-5K, which features an integrated HulaPoint II pointing device and a number pad. Rackdrawers from iKey have a CRS steel construction, coated with black epoxy paint, and chrome-plated, ball-bearing slides. Each rackdrawer is 19 inches wide with a 1U rack height. The standard size drawer has 14-inch rails (15-inch-deep drawer), and comes with a chrome handle or pull slot option. The large drawer has 16-inch rails (17-inch-deep drawer) and comes with a T-handle or locking T-handle option. ♦
