Editor's Perspective
Congratulations to Fred Lewis and his NTSA team for sponsoring another successful I/ITSEC. The 2008 conference provided a great opportunity to speak with many of our readers and meet new members of the community. Here are a few items that caught my attention during the week.
There’s an important challenge facing our industry teammates. Rep. Randy Forbes, Congressional M&S Caucus founder, told attendees that his group lost eight members through retirements and the election process. As the caucus is the advocate for M&S on Capitol Hill and with the administration, this is a huge loss. I encourage industry members to visit their representatives and senators, educate them about M&S and its value to their district and state, and invite them to join the caucus. M&S is a great investment for DoD and other government agencies—let’s not lose ground in the new Congress and with the Obama administration.
I was pleased to learn that Dr. Sam Kleinman, DUSD/Readiness, and his team have a campaign plan to promote training in the 2009 Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) process. This is significant— the QDR is the policy underpinning for many policy efforts for DoD training. My interview with Kleinman and Dan Gardner, his director for readiness and training, during the conference is published in this issue.
The industry/government team demonstrated its progress in technology. On one front, the community is working to provide common databases that will transcend the very different fidelity and mission requirements of ground warriors, and UAS, helo and fast-jet operators. I was also impressed with the efforts to achieve improved visual acuity and other attributes in projectors and other visual display components. 20/20 remains the goal!
A great effort by all. And thanks for your insights and updates.
