Team Orlando

The NATO Research and Technology Organization's Human Factors and Medicine Panel held a workshop in Orlando during the week of October 19th. Robert Sottilare, Ph.D., chief technology officer at the U.S. Army SFC Paul Ray Smith Simulation and Training Technology Center in Orlando, chaired the “Human Dimensions in Embedded Virtual Simulation” workshop. This event brought together experts in the area of embedded virtual simulation, including a strong contingent from Central Florida. Mr. James Shiflett, SAIC, Orlando; Dirk Schmidt, Ph.D. Krauss-Maffei Wegmann, Munich; Lieutenant Colonel Gerbe Verhaaf, Royal Netherlands Air Force; and Lochlan Magee, Ph.D., Defence R&D Canada, Toronto were all keynote speakers. The four workshop sessions featured other speakers from the United States, France, The Netherlands, Germany, and Slovenia. Orlando-based attendees included representatives from the Army Research Institute, PEO STRI, University of Central Florida’s Institute for Simulation and Training, and SAIC. The workshop provided a forum for the attendees to discuss requirements, design, state-of-the-art technologies, training management issues and the potential of embedded training and mission rehearsal technologies for NATO militaries. According to Dr. Sottilare, “the event was a great success because we were able to share successful implementations of embedded virtual simulation, and we now understand where capability gaps exist and what research is still needed to realize embedded training capabilities in future NATO operational systems.” ♦
